Zamba said meetings should be held within duty stations and that board meetings for parastatals must be held in the boardrooms.

She further said meetings in Mponera for government offices based in Lilongwe have been banned.

“No government institution or parastatal is permitted to conduct meetings in Mponela, Mangochi or Salima,” Zamba said.

She said this is in addition to the austerity measures on government spending announced by president Lazarus Chakwera recently.

But reacting to the news, Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councilor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga says he is against the decision saying this will bring untold suffering in the value chain and the revenue collection.

“We are pegging tourism as a strategic industry for recovery, especially after COVID-19. This will bring untold suffering to many people in the value chain even revenue collection.

“I’m talking of those employed by the hotels, the suppliers, and the car hires MRA revenue collections from the transport sector. There is a need for cost-based analysis before the implementation of some of these austerity measures. I beg you to approach the madam boss on this,” says Chimbanga.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Minister Michael Usi is yet to comment on that matter.
