Businessmen and women plying their trade in the hospitality industry at Mponela Trading Center in Dowa have written Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture to consider lifting a ban on meetings outside duty stations of all government ministries and departments.

In a letter addressed to the ministry and copied to Member of Parliament for the Area (Dowa Central Constituency) Darlington Harawa, the businesses complain that barely five months after enforcing the ban, the decision has affected and crumble almost every business venture in the area, forcing some to close shop or downside staff, among others.

Chairperson for Mponela Business Association Kondwani Kuwonga-Nkhoma has confirmed to Zodiak Online that the business environment in the area has worsened especially in the aftermath of government ban on conferences outside Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, Linde Hotels, which is one of the renowned accommodation unit at Mponela has hinted that it will be forced to retrench over half of its staff, if the ban will not be lifted anytime soon as they are grappling to meet their wage bill, pay utility bills and also meet various bank obligations.
